Institution Research

We have chosen Universal as our distributing company as they are The mainstream company within the film industry. We decided tis because where Universal is such a well known, established name, we could get all the exposure as possibly needed to aide our film's succession throughout the world. Also, Universal are known worldwide for producing famous action/thriller films, which generally have substantial success, which we feel is a big bonus to the release and distribution to our final product.

Se7en Essay

Through the opening sequence of seven we are introduced to our main character Somerset who is played by Morgan Freeman. Detective Somerset is through the first shot apparent to be in his kitchen. through this shot is made apparent that Somerset is a very organised and clean character which forces us to believe he has some form of OCD or that he is never in his house through the job which he does we can tell this by the cleanliness of his kitchen which looks unlived in and unused. Furthermore through this shot it looks a cold and dark place, this creates an eery atmosphere for the spectator and sets the original dark theme for the film. Also the window in this scene creates the original police theme by the apparent prison cell affect in which the blinds create. Additionally through this shot the chess board plays are part in which he is showing that he allways wants to be one step ahead of the criminal, and also tells the viewer that he is playing against himself or an opanant (criminal) being that chess is a long a strategic game it shows the long and strategic measures in which he must convict the criminal that it is not just a quick catch of the criminal. Additionally through this sequence you see Somerset doing up his cuffs and sorting his tie with a depressed look about him, this may give the spectator the impression that he is not enjoying what he is doing or not looking forward to what he may be facing through that days work, this also gives a slight impression of the job in which he does, this is also done by look in which Somerset is presenting to the audience. Then the shot shows Somerset picking up his tools of the trade in a very specific order not just the way they are layed out, firstly this is apparent because of the way rthey are layed out all directly straight and next to eachother shows the organisation involved in his life and possibly his job, furhtermore through this sequence the order in which he picks the items up shows the great organisation with him and his life because if he was just an ordernary character he would just pick the items up fromleft to right in the order but Somerset picks up each item in a specific order with a set structure to it. This part of the scene finally shows that he is a police officer by the view given of the police badge. Lastly through this sequence it shows his suit jacket and him brushing dust off of it. This also makes apparent the OCD nature in which Somerset has.

We then hear the speach of a police man describing a murder to Somserset which to the viewer is setting the scene and making it apparent that a murder has taken place. Also through the other police man saying "we will be glad when your gone Somerset" shows the audience that Somerset is made to seem anouying to the other characters in the movie becuase of some questions in which he asks. Also through the asking of the question it shows Somerset's attention to great detail and shows the care he has for each murder case in which he is involved.

Brad Pitts character is portrayed to be seen as rude. Through the interuption of Somerset. Furthermore there is a fight for power between the two characters through the walking down the street the continuous change of who is walking infront of who, this shows that they both wish to have the power and that there may be a constant power throughout the whole film, this also leads the spectator to believe that there may be some form of conflict between the two characters in the film as they seem to clash together as people.

This opening also affectively uses the typography and sound. This is used in which the typography and sound set the correct theme and atmosphere of the movie. The atmosphere is set to be quite disturbing also this is done by the distortedness of the typography. Also the images in which are shown set the true disturbed crime theme in which the film has throughout, the blacking out of what seems to be a child's face is particularly affective in making the viewer feel uneasy because this is an un natural thing to of seen and to think someone would do, the feeling of crime is set by the continuous use of photo's of dead bodies in which we associate with a crime seen of the police as photographic evidence.

Overall I believe the opening of this film is of the extreme effectiveness of creating the un easy feel and crime image. This is successfully done by the actual show of the police badge as well as the uneasy images in which we are faced with throughout the opening. In a way the audience are also made to feel un easy by the OCD nature of Somerset because to us this may be seen to be un natural because we do not act this way we do not have certain things go in certain places of have a certain order in which we get dressed. I believe therefore that the title sequence is very effective in hitting it's intended feeling throughout the opening.

Continuity Piece 11/11/10

What did you find difficult about this task?

Personally i do not believe that there was any difficulty with the task its self and the completion of the continuity piece. Although there was issues with the performance and remembrance of our lines during the piece and performing in each view needed. Also we had a lighting issue where as the film in which we decided to plan and do required a pitch black setting.

What new skills have you acquired or developed?

Through this task i have developed more of a confidence skill in the performing and and making of a film piece also i have a basic grown knowledge of the editing process.

What worked well?

Through the piece i believe that the setting worked well to create an atmosphere needed so that the effectiveness. Also the lighting or lack of lighting which also helped the create the desired atmosphere.

What could you or your team have done better?

Through the piece we could have organised the lighting more efficient so that we do not have to go around looking for lighting in which we could use. also we need to be more prepared with the script for the performance of the piece its self. Furthermore I believe that during the pice that the acting was in need of improvement through to much time spent looking at the floor and not enough view time in the speech involving my face in particular.
